Can you get a mortgage when you have HIV?

Yes, since 2005 it is now possible for HIV-positive people to get a mortgage because it is now possible to get life insurance. This is naturally dependent on the financial circumstances, such as your income, whether you already have a life insurance policy, any other assets, and of course the price of the property you hope to purchase.

In the Netherlands, as of January 1st, 2006, the new health insurance system requires that everyone be insured. The difference between public and private insurance is now defunct and everyone now qualifies for basic health coverage.

Must I inform my specialist of my HIV status before having an operation?

No, for these purposes you are not obliged to do so. Everyone has the right to medical treatment and the same precautionary measures should be taken for each person. Having HIV is no exception.

Are you obliged during a job interview to reveal that you have HIV?

No, you are not obliged to reveal this. You cannot be questioned about your health or medical conditions (HIV included) during a job interview. You will need to advise them if you feel it will influence your performance. For example, you don't need to mention your HIV status, but you might refer to the fact that you suffer from chronic fatigue.

Are you required to complete a health declaration form?

A health declaration form must be truthfully completed. That applies to questions about HIV status and AIDS.

Do I have to have a medical exam for a job?

No, only for exceptional circumstances. The Medical Examination law prohibits medical examinations for jobs. A medical exam can only take place when it has been specified in the advertisement as a requirement and on advice of a government medical officer. Exceptions can be made when special medical conditions demand it.

Do I have the right to medical treatment without a residency permit?

All people in the Netherlands have the right to necessary medical care. Every doctor and midwife in the Netherlands are obliged to provide all necessary medical care to anyone who requires it. Is it possible to get a residency permit for the Netherlands based on my HIV status?

In principal, HIV is no grounds on which to seek asylum. In some cases you can request residency documentation based on a med ical urgency and thus humanitarian reasons. Are there travel restrictions for HIV-positive people?

Some countries have travel restrictions against visitors who are HIV positive. In this case, make sure you have a doctor's letter, especially if you are going to use medication. In this letter (written in English) it should mention that you need the medication for medical reasons. If you plan to stay longer or are going to work for a long period, some countries require a doctor's letter declaring that you are not HIV positive.

During the Nationaal Congres Soa*Hiv*Seks  on December 1st, 2009 (World AIDS Day), Brenda Mugabona (15) who has been HIV-positive since birth, presented the first copy of the new brochure, “Positive Living” to Oscar Hammerstein (a senior lawyer who is open about his HIV status).

HIV for beginners
Positive living is a guide about 'HIV for beginners': it contains basic information in easy-to-understand language on all the things you encounter when you've found out that you have HIV.

The guide includes tons of references to websites and brochures where people can read more about specific HIV-related topics, along with interviews and testimony from a wide spectrum of twelve people with HIV.  

To disclose or not?! If you ever do disclose, you can't retract. In Positive living there are all sorts of possible arguments for revealing and a summary of arguments to keep it to yourself.   

After reading this you will be up-to-date on relevant information about the treatment for HIV. If you have HIV, you don't need to know all the names of the HIV medicines. But  it is really important, for example, that you know that your possibilities for the future are not limited if you change medication.
